At the June 20 meeting of the 茄子视频 City Unified School District Board, the Board announced the appointment of Sharifa Siti-Bolton as Principal of Parkway Elementary.  

The Board recognized and thanked outgoing Student Board Member Liliana Grace Miller Segura, who graduated this month from West Campus High School. As Student Board Member, Liliana represented the SCUSD student body and provided a student voice for the SCUSD鈥檚 Board of Education. 

The Board recognized and honored the 2023-2024 茄子视频 City Unified School District retirees. The retiring SCUSD staff members served a combined 2,629 years in the 茄子视频 City Unified School District. 

The Board recognized two English Language Development (ELD) Teachers of the Year, who were awarded by the District鈥檚 Multilingual Literacy Department. The Elementary ELD Teacher of the Year is Veronica Avelar, who teaches at Suy:u Elementary School. The Secondary ELD Teacher of the Year is Maria Lyles, who teaches at C.K. McClatchy High School. English Language Development Teachers work with emergent bilingual students.

The Board took action to approve two resolutions that were developed by the District鈥檚 Youth Advisory Council:

  • A resolution developed in collaboration between the District鈥檚 LGBTQ+ Task Force and Youth Development Support Services that aims to ensure that transgender and gender non-conforming students are able to access restroom facilities that align with their gender identity. 
  • A resolution that aims to ensure that campus restroom facilities are regularly sanitized and appropriately stocked with toilet paper, soap, paper towels, and menstrual hygiene products.  

The Board received informational updates on the following topics:

  • The process for annual charter school oversight, investigation, and renewal. The 茄子视频 City Unified School Board authorizes 15 charter schools. The  District is required to conduct an annual review of the authorized charter schools and report that information to the SCUSD Board. The District also receives, reviews, and brings charter renewal petitions to the Board. 
  • The design and construction of updated facilities at Fern Bacon Middle School. This school was identified as a campus in need for replacement or modernization using the equity and facility condition indexes as part of SCUSD鈥檚 Facilities Master Plan.
  • The Citizens鈥 Bond Oversight Committee鈥檚 annual report for 2023-2024 for Measures Q and R, and the Citizens鈥 Bond Oversight Committee鈥檚 annual report for 2023-2024 for Measures H. These committees oversee the District鈥檚 expenditures of bond proceeds by reviewing expenditure reports produced by the District to ensure bond proceeds are expended only for the purpose set forth in the ballot measure and that no bond proceeds are used for any teacher or administrative salaries or other operating expenses. The Committee works with an independent auditor, conducts research, and conducts site visits to guarantee these duties are fulfilled. 

The Board held a public hearing on SCUSD鈥檚 Special Education Local Plan Area (SELPA) Local Plan and subsequently took action to approve the plan. The SCUSD SELPA Local Plan is required to be adopted annually by the District鈥檚 governing board, and all SELPAs are required to submit a Local Plan to the California Department of Education for approval. The purpose of the Local Plan is to:

  • Outline the special education policies/procedures and services that are offered throughout the SELPA.
  • To assure access to special education and related services for all individuals with exceptional needs residing within the geographic areas served by the plan.
  • To assure compliance with all Federal and State codes and statutes.

The Board took action to approve the Declaration of Need for Fully Qualified Educators for the 2024-2025 School Year. The 2024-2025 Declaration of Need allows the District to apply for, and the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CCTC) to issue, Emergency Crosscultural Language and Academic Development (CLAD), Bilingual Crosscultural Language and Academic Development (BCLAD), Resources Specialist, Teacher Librarian Services, or Limited Term Assignment Permits for teachers.

The Board took action to approve the District鈥檚 2024-25 Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP), LCAP Federal Addendum, and CA Dashboard Local Indicators. The Board also approved the 2024-25 Local Control Accountability Plans and associated documents for 茄子视频 City Unified School District鈥檚 5 locally-funded dependent Charter Schools: Bowling Green Elementary, George Washington Carver School of Arts and Sciences, New Joseph Bonnheim Community Charter, 茄子视频 New Technology High School, and The Met High School.

The Board took action to adopt the District鈥檚 fiscal year 2024-2025 Proposed Budget for All Funds and Right-Sizing Plan which was presented as a Public Hearing Item at the June 6, 2024 Board Meeting. The approved budget establishes the District鈥檚 expenditure authority for all funds.
